Special Collection scheduled for October 2005

At the Mott Haven Branch of The New York Public Library

321 East 140th Street in the South Bronx

Theme of show

WeĠd like to show art that has an affinity for the qualities indigenous to a libraryÑthis could be art that addresses the conceptual space of a library, or art that works with the physical structure of a library. Or the art may just be fitting in this kind of space.

A library is a non-commercial public space, and serves as a repository and forum for ideas. We think that a good art show could have the same features, and that both library and artists will benefit from this cooperative pairing.

WeĠd like to draw work from a diverse range of artists and artisans, both local Bronx artists and artists in the New York City metro area.

The show will coincide with other art events scheduled for October in the Mott Haven neighborhood, including a weekend of open artist studios, and a film screening series.

We envision this show to be like a good secret: a show installed inside a pre-existing space that uses this space in a new and interesting way.

Guidelines

Large wall spaces are available for two-dimensional works between windows, ideal for large works that will fit nicely on a wall of 8 feet wide by 6 1/2 feet, six feet above library shelves.

Wall spaces for smaller two-dimensional works are in stairways and lower walls by elevators: work should be framed or protected in some way. Something attached to the back of the work that a wire could be looped through is also desired (this will help secure work to the wall).

Minimal impact to the library for installation is needed, the library has just been renovated (we will use special hooks). Generally, work must be light enough to hang off hooks.

Artists interested in installing in alternative spaces or showing three-dimensional work are encouraged to visit the library to scout out the architecture of the interior. All alternative space use will be negotiated by the showĠs organizers with the head librarian on a case by case basis. Low-impact installation required. Alternative spaces and ideas are encouraged.

For more information about visiting the Mott Haven Branch please visit the library website at http://www.nypl.org/branch/local/bx/mh.cfm

The library walls are yellow.

There is no insurance for the art (if it is down low it might get touched).

Keep in mind that lots of children use this library.

Any sales through this show will donate ten percent of the proceeds to the library.
