Motor City Window Cleaning Co. business card on the windowsill of 345 S. Main St., Memphis, Tennessee

Motor City Window Cleaning Co. is named after my grandfather's Detroit area business, c. 1940-1964, and was brought to Memphis, Tennessee in May 2013. Like real life service companies, Motor City Window Cleaning Co. interrupts others while they are at work.

Motor City Window Cleaning staged three interruptions. Each unannounced interruption was created so that the audience, initially focused on something else, might rethink their surroundings. The company's actions in Memphis were planned and performed with a group of Memphis based artists.

Motor City Window Cleaning Co. was included in the 2013 apexart Franchise exhibition Memphis Social, curated by Tom McGlynn, and was made possible by sixty-eight individual funders, USA Projects, and apexart. Thanks to the Hyde Gallery at Nesin Graduate School | Memphis College of Art, Marshall Arts, and Crosstown Arts, and the many individuals who made this project possible.

Information released before the performances disguised the true nature of the project. Read it on the Art in Odd Places blog.
